Benson Selected to be Blue Angel

Meridian Naval Air Station, Miss. Lt. Lance Benson, an instructor at Meridian Naval Air Station, has been chosen to be a member of the prestigious Blue Angels flying team.
Benson is one of two pilots chosen through an extensive process to join the highly skilled aviators.
“I cannot believe that they chose me to do this,” said Benson. “This is absolutely awesome.”
For more than a year, Lt. Benson has worked as an instructor for VT-7.
“We knew the quality of instructors that we have here and applicants that go to the team,” said VT-7 executive officer Pavao Huldisch. “And with him being one of our best instructors out here, we definitely were glad that he made it, but we weren’t super shocked.”
Now in its 69th year, the Blue Angels is the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron. Aviators from the Navy and Marines Corps compete for spots on the team. According to NAS Public Affairs Office, Benson is only the second aviator from NAS Meridian to be chosen for the team. The other was selected in 2004.
“It’s almost unrealistic at this point,” Benson said. “To me, I think that it’s really important that we get out there and show everybody what the Navy is really all about.”
Lt. Benson will leave for training within the next two weeks.
