Hey, hey, hey! Fat Albert is coming back to Reno and the National Championship Air Races.
So too, are Fat Albert’s speedy brothers – the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team – which released its 2015 and 2016 schedules this week, showing Reno on the schedule for Sept. 17-18, 2016.
It will be the first time since 2009 that one of the Big 3 military flight demonstration teams (Blue Angels, U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, or Canadian Air Force Snowbirds) will perform at the National Championship Air Races.
Fat Albert, the Blue Angels’ C-130 transport plane that also puts on demonstrations of its capabilities, will join the fighters in coming to Reno.
In recent years, the Patriot Jet Team, a civilian unit consisting of former Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and Snowbirds pilots, have been performing at the Reno Air Races, which have faced financial, scheduling and sequestration issues in the years since the 2011 crash of a race place that killed 10 spectators and the pilot.
It is a two-year process to get one of the military flight demonstration teams.
At the 2015 Air Races in September, the Breitling Jet Team, making its debut United States Tour, is scheduled to perform in Reno. Breitling is the major sponsor of the National Championship Air Races.
The jet team features seven L-39 Albatross aircraft that reach speeds up to 565 mph.
