ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Smoky Mountain Air Show is this weekend and the Blue Angels will take flight for the first time in 16 years over East Tennessee.
But, the incredible show you will see in the air, doesn’t happen without Van Wilkerson on the ground.
“I ensure the jets are safe for flight and for the air crew to get in and fly,” says Wilkerson.
He’s served in the Navy for 19 years and the maintenance chief for the Blue Angels for six months.
“It truly is amazing to see the jets in the air,” he says.
Wilkerson has traveled the country for his job. But now, his job has finally brought him back home.
“I’m a local boy. I’m from Sweetwater, TN. I went to school in McMinn County,” he says.
This weekend, like every other, he’ll do his job. But, this time, it will be with some familiar faces in the audience.
“To show my mom and my family what I do after being in the Navy so long is a great opportunity and it truly is amazing,” he says.
