The Blue Angels will be taking a break from Virginia Beach.
The Navy’s premier flight demonstration team released its 2019 air show schedule on Wednesday and Virginia Beach didn’t make the list.
The Blue Angels perform jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics in F/A-18 Hornets across the country every year and are a major draw whenever they perform at Naval Air Station Oceana.
The Blue Angels have performed there the past several years, including this September, and are scheduled to be back next year. About 249,000 people attended the free air show at Oceana this year.
But in 2019, the Blue Angels will be performing in California around the time the Oceana air show typically occurs. The closest the Blue Angels will perform to Hampton Roads that year will be at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.; in Ocean City, Md.; and at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
The Navy said in a statement that air show sites are chosen to support Defense Department objectives, which include recruiting and demonstrating capabilities to the American public and U.S. allies.
The Oceana air show is often a homecoming of sorts for many on the Blue Angels team. Oceana is the Navy’s East Coast master jet base.
