This year’s OC Air Show is loaded up with firsts, including the first ever international jet demonstration team and the inaugural performance of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.
To add to the list, the Blue Angels’ act will feature the group’s first-ever female pilot, a 2008 Naval Academy grad who comes from a family of military pilots.
Marine Capt. Katie Higgins will be at the controls when the C-130 Hercules known as “Fat Albert” takes to the skies above Ocean City’s beaches in June. The cargo plane, which carries supplies for the Blue Angels’ unit, will also perform a demonstration for the crowd during the show set for June 13-14.
“We are excited to welcome Katie to Ocean City and we know all of Maryland is proud of her,” said Bryan Lilley, president of the OC Air Show.
Higgins, whose parents live in Severna Park, was named to the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, aka Blue Angels, last July. While she is not the first female member of the elite team, she is its first pilot. Two other women Blue Angels serve as events coordinator and navigator.
Higgins has spent the winter training with the group. She made her first official appearance with the Blue Angels in the skies this month at an air show in Beaufort, S.C.
In an interview with The Sun last summer, Higgins said she was “in shock,” upon learning she had made the Blue Angels. “It was something I had dreamed about for a while, and to have it come into fruition was amazing.”
Tickets to the OC Air Show are $19 for the Drop Zone. VIP tickets are $119-$219. Two-day packages start at $179. Guests can save 25 percent off day-of admission tickets by purchasing in advance. Go to ocairshow.com for details.
