Group Wants “No Jets” At Cherry Fest

Veterans For Peace – Chapter 50 in Traverse City has begun to distribute handbills around town calling for the end of jets at
the National Cherry Festival (NCF). Specifically, the group is opposed
to the participation of the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds or any other jet
aircraft as part of the week-long celebration. The U.S. Air Force
Thunderbirds returned to Traverse City’s Cherry Festival for the first
time in 25 years in 2015, and the Navy Blue Angels will make their 13th
appearance at the National Cherry Festival in 2016.

Among the Veterans For Peace stated reasons for elimating the military
aircraft: lack of respect for veterans, including those suffering from
post-traumatic stress disorder; money; air pollution; noise pollution
and noise level effects on animals, children and the elderly. Veterans
For Peace also claim the aircraft are “instruments of war and recruiting
and have no place at our Cherry Festival.”

The veterans group is joined by several other local organizations in
seeking this ban, including MidEast: JustPeace, Interlochen Peace,
Traverse Greens, Occupy Traverse City and Episcopal Peace Fellowship of
Grace Episcopal Church.
