It’s time to rethink the Miramar Air Show

Regarding Sandy Johnson’s letter “Miramar Air Show a great local tradition” (Sept. 26) where she states “I cannot believe people actually protested the air show at Miramar,” I must strongly disagree.

The San Diego Veterans For Peace, an international veterans group, is one of the groups in San Diego encouraging the public to stay home and avoid the Miramar Air Show each year.

Our reasons are many but include: The Miramar Air Sow glorifies war with an exciting and colorful show of speed, power and noise; it celebrates the skill and machinery that exist to kill, maim and destroy; it is very dangerous — 10 percent of all Blue Angel pilots have been killed in accidents.

Miramar jets have already crashed in several San Diego neighborhoods; and the air show serves as a misleading and unrealistic recruiting tool of our youth.
