With thousands of cars set to swarm on McGhee Tyson Airport for the Smoky Mountain Air Show this weekend, safety officials have released a list of road closures in the area around the venue.

Here is the road closure information provided by the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office:

• Beginning Saturday morning until 7 p.m. Sunday, the median crossover on Alcoa Highway at Wrights Ferry Road will be closed. There will be no access to Wrights Ferry Road from Alcoa Highway northbound during this time. There will be no access to Alcoa Highway North from Wrights Ferry Road during this time. Any traffic on Wrights Ferry Road approaching Alcoa Highway during this time will be forced to turn South onto Alcoa Highway.

• From 3-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the right lane of Alcoa Highway Northbound will be closed approaching the Hunt Road entrance ramp to allow post event traffic from Hunt Road free flow movement onto Alcoa Highway North.

• From 3-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the exit ramp from southbound Alcoa Highway to Hunt Road will be closed.

• From 3- 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the median crossover on Alcoa Highway at Airbase Road will be closed. There will be no access to Airbase Road from Alcoa Highway northbound during this time. There will be no access to Alcoa Highway North from Airbase Road during this time. Any traffic on Airbase Road approaching Alcoa Highway during this time will be forced to turn South onto Alcoa Highway.

There will be message boards along Alcoa Highway and Pellissippi Parkway to alert drivers to traffic patterns, and people can tune in to the Highway Advisory Radio system, 530 AM, for traffic messages, said TDOT Region One Spokesman Mark Nagi.

“We understand that this is a major event for folks in East Tennessee, especially in Knox and Blount counties,” Nagi said. “We ask that folks give themselves extra time to get to and from the event, and we do expect increased traffic throughout the weekend.”

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office said there will be a large law enforcement presence in the area surrounding the air show and the designated parking areas.

TDOT and BCSO both emphasized that parking in the median or on the shoulder of Alcoa Highway during the air show is prohibited and will enforced.

The Smoky Mountain Air Show Partnership has posted maps with suggested routes to each of the three parking areas on their website smokymountainairshow.com.

The Green parking lot is on the north side of the airport property, off Wrights Ferry Road; the Blue lot is on the east side of the airport, off of Hunt Road; and the Red lot is on the southeast side, off of Louisville Road.

People who plan to purchase parking passes the day of the event are to go to the Red parking lot.
