Birmingham has been chosen as one of 14 cities that will host a Navy Week event in 2018.
Navy Week celebrations feature a mix of events designed to give the public a better sense of the U.S. Navy’s capabilities. According to information released Wednesday by the Navy, activities planned for Birmingham include a visit by sailors assigned to the submarine USS Alabama and the USS Constitution; demonstrations by divers and Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams; skydiving displays by the Leap Frogs; Navy Band performances and more.
According to the Navy, Birmingham Navy Week will take place April 9-15, coinciding with a Blue Angels air show in Tuscaloosa. That show is set for April 14-15.
“Because the Navy is concentrated primarily on both coasts, we’re challenged to communicate our mission away from fleet concentration areas,” Cmdr. Linda Rojas, Director of the Navy Office of Community Outreach, which plans and executes the Navy Week program, said in a news release announcing Birmingham Navy Week. “That’s where the Navy Week program comes in.”
“We know we can’t bring a ship or a submarine to Birmingham,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brett Dawson, Navy Office of Community Outreach event planning department head, “but we will bring in as much of the Navy as we can.”
Navy Week was held in Mobile in February 2017, coinciding with Mardi Gras.
