US Navy Blue Angels back in Michigan ahead of weekend flight shows

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are back in Michigan skies.
Pilots are in Traverse City right now, practicing for the National Cherry Festival air show this weekend.
It’s the Blue Angels’ first since Captain Jeff Koose died after his jet crashed last month.
Only five jets will fly instead of the usual six, but the pilots say they’re trained for it.
“We represent the pride and professionalism of the Navy Marine Corps, and
hoping to inspire a culture of excellence. That’s what Jeff Kusse was
about, that’s what we’re about,” said Commander Ryan Bernacchi.
The Blue Angels lost Captain Koose the same day a U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds pilot ejected safely from their jet in Colorado.
This weekend will be the first Thunderbirds performance since then.
It’s happening in West Michigan at Battle Creek’s Field of Flight.
The Thunderbirds will practice Friday before they perform Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
