Better late than never: Blue Angels fly over downtown Nashville

The Blue Angels fly over the city during 2019 CMA Fest Thursday, June 6, 2019, in Nashville, Tenn.

Despite earlier reports concerning inclement weather, the Blue Angels made it to Nashville Thursday and flew over downtown, drawing praise from onlookers across Music City.

Earlier in the morning, the Blue Angles tweeted the flyover might not happen citing a weather delay leaving Pensacola, Florida.

“The pilots will make a real-time decision based on schedule and weather en route,” the team tweeted. “If only we could control the (weather)!”

The jets were slated to fly over Broadway in Music City at 9:45 a.m. en route to The Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna.

Shortly before 10:10 a.m., the Navy flight demonstration squadron was spotted jetting across the downtown skyline.

“On this 75th anniversary of D-Day, it is GREAT to have the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angel’s visiting Nashville skies!” Metro police tweeted.

James Shaw Jr., the Waffle House hero is all smiles after flying with Lt. Cary Rickoff of the U.S.Navy Blue Angels on the #7 F-18 Hornet, on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at the Smyrna Airport.

“(It was) amazing. No words can express it. … Nothing like that,” said Shaw, who was visibly a bit shaky after the ride. “It’s like you’re on a trampoline with a $28 million dollar piece of equipment.”

D-Day Anniversary flyover

Nashville will have a second chance to see military planes fly over the city later in the day.

A team of vintage World War II planes will fly over Nashville at 2 p.m., dropping rose petals to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

“Nothing like a flyover by @BlueAngels to display a little freedom and patriotism especially on this day of remembered,” DJ Layne tweeted.
