Crowd favorite Blue Angels return to Great Tennessee Air Show

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – It was impossible not to hear the sound they call ‘freedom’ flying over the Smyrna skies Saturday at the 2019 Great Tennessee Air Show.

Thousands of people braved the scattered rain showers to catch the sights and sounds of some of the best in aviation. The highlight of the show — the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

This air show is a little more special to the community and the pilots than others on this year’s tour, flown in memory of Captain Jeff Kuss who died here ahead of the last air show three years ago.

“I was definitely wanting to be a part, the memorial, and just enjoying the atmosphere that was here,” said Jason Wiley of Franklin.

“I’m glad that they’re back, I hope they keep coming back. It was unfortunate what happened, but he did, you know he’s a hero,” said Doug Stogner from Donelson.

Heroes supporting heroes.

“I’m proud to be a vet, I just come out and support these guys,” said Bruce Barker of Springhill, a retired Airforce flight mechanic, and engineer, “I wish everybody, everybody could come see these guys. This is what it’s all about right here, freedom as it is.”

There were minor rain delays throughout the show but fans roughed it out to see those blue F/A-18’s.

“I never even got under an umbrella, never got under a tent, I said if it rains, it rains, let’s do this!” Wiley said.

Pouring rain postponed the finale 30 minutes, the clouds cleared just long enough for their performance before starting up again.

Some might say someone was looking down.
