West Michigan military: See achievements by local service men and women

U.S. Marine Sgt. Shawn Barnes, a 2008 Hudsonville High graduate, received the Blue Angels Crest during a recent awards ceremony. He is currently serving as an aircraft mechanic on both the F-18 Hornets and the C-130 and is stationed in Pensacola, Florida. Sgt. Barnes, who reenlisted last summer, is slated to be working the Blue Angels show in Ypsilanti, MI on Sept. 2 and 3.

The mission of the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron is “to showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach.”

U.S. Air Force Airman Marcella Adriana Swets, a 2015 Plymouth Christian High graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. Swets is currently stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi studying and specializing in radio and network transmissions.

Lexus VanHoven, a 2017 East Grand Rapids High graduate, was recently accepted to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and will be reporting to boot camp at Camp Buckner in New York in July.

U.S. Air Force Airman Kye B. Mingus, a 2013 Potterville High graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Nathanial J. Getchel, a 2014 Traverse City West High and 2016 Northwest Michigan College graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. Getchel earned distinction as an honor graduate.

U.S. Air Force Airman Ashton M. Ashbury, a 2016 Traverse City West graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

Retired Army Col. Scott Haraburda, was named Grand Rapids Community College’s 2017 Distinguised Alumnus. Haraburda received an associate degree in 1981 from what was then Grand Rapids Junior College. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Central Michigan University, a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and master’s and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Michigan State University.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1981 through 2010, including a 2007 deployment to Kuwait to correct logistics problems in the war zone. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and three Meritorious Service medals.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Tara J. Stetler, a 2013 Dexter High and 2016 Grand Valley State University graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

U.S. Air Force Airman Abigail D. Canfield, a 2014 Lighthouse Christian Academy (Buckley, MI) graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, in San Antonio, Texas. Canfield earned distinction as an honor graduate.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jordan P. Duff, a 2014 Whitehall High School graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. Duff earned distinction as an honor graduate.

U.S. Air Force Airman Jacob R. Wilkins, a 2014 Pine River High (Luther, MI) graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

U.S. Air Force Airman Michael H. Cronin, a 2015 Whitinsville (MA) Christian High graduate, recently completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

U.S. Air Force Airman Konstantin S. Zelenskiy, a 2016 Traverse City Central High graduate, completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.
